I LOVE THE SARANAC-LOWELL STATE GAME AREA SO MUCH that I’ve organized a work day with Pleasant Peninsula and some additional help from the Michigan DNR!
This earth day, join us as we walk through the property pickin’ up trash and spending time together in nature.
So, this Earth Day, let’s all gather and take care of our land together!
Along the way, we’ll document some of the best springtime forms of life and learn about the ecology at the Lowell State Game Area. We’ll discover some bizarre and wild species and (hopefully) you’ll leave with a story or two to tell your friends!
We’re going to have one group during the work-day; so if your employer pays you to volunteer on Earth Day, come hang out with us! But if your employer doesn’t pay you to volunteer during your normal shift hours, no worries - we want you to enjoy time with us too! We’ve got two shifts out in the field and ready to clean up one of Kent Counties greatest remaining Natural Areas!
We’re asking for registration primarily so we know how many trash bags to bring! If you happen to have some work gloves and trash bags just laying around - feel free to bring them with you since that will help keep the costs low for us!
There’s more information on what to bring and where to meet below. Remember that springtime in nature can be a messy hike, so long pants and footwear that is waterproof (or that you don’t mind getting messy) will be helpful.
What to Bring
Work Gloves or Rubber Gloves
Pants and Closed-toe Hiking Shoes
Water Bottle (optional)
1-2 Big Black Trash Bags (optional)
Location Information
All work will be done in the North Unit of the State Game Area and parking is limited. If you are volunteering with a friend, I recommend carpooling to minimize the amount of vehicles we need to manage. A good carpooling location is available at the Fallasburg Park Disc Golf Course: 14100 McPherson St NE, Lowell, MI 49331
1-3pm Shift
Parking is easier at this location due to the ability to park on the shoulder of McPherson St. But if you are carpooling, the disc golf course is only a 30 second drive away.
6-8pm Shift
Parking will be a bit difficult here. Since we will need to park in a single-file line along the 2-track, please carpool if you are attending with a friend. The disk-golf course is a 5 minute drive from this location.
NOTE: I will be talking with the neighbors who live on a private drive across the street. If you are volunteering for this shift, and parking information is updated, I will send an email notifying you of the updated and easier parking situation.
